Horizontal stripes give unexpected verve and a pleasant, modern look to any room.

Marking off for horizontal stripes

1. Measure 12" (30.5 cm) up from the floor with a level/ruler and mark with chalk.
2. Continue marking 12" (30.5 cm) spans up the wall until you reach the ceiling (Photo 1).
3. Use the level to chalk a horizontal line around the room at the height of each mark (Photo 2).
4. Tape off the stripe that you intend to paint by applying the tape so that the lower edge of the top tape is against the lower line of your stripe area (Photos 3 and 4).
5. Continue marking off and taping stripes around the room.

Painting the horizontal stripes

1. Once a stripe is completely taped, paint or glaze inside the taped edges (Photo 5).
2. When the paint is dry, remove the tape (Photo 6).
